We are coordinators of the National Ocean Policy (NOP) with a vision of  a “Healthy Ocean that sustains the livelihoods and aspirations of current and future generations of Fiji.” Our main objectives are to:

  • Operationalise the NOP Implementation Plan.
  • Mainstream ocean agenda across Government operations and catalyse private sector involvement.
  • Facilitate 100% sustainable management of Fiji’s EEZ and 30% of which to be Marine Protected Areas by 2030.

We are also developing the Savusavu Blue Town Model (SBTM), a pathway creating circular blue economy in a small coastal community. In partnership with the Ministry of Local Government the first phase of consultations is underway to develop and operationalize the Savusavu Blue Town Model Master Plan in synergy with Fiji’s blue economy ambitions and mobilise non-government sustainable development finance. The aim in future is to replicate the SBTM in other municipalities around Fiji.

We also have a strong representation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This and similar work covers Global Commitments on Oceans to coordinate the Oceans Pathway agenda, create global momentum for high level ocean action, and mainstreaming oceans into the climate change negotiations agenda and into climate action.
