The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is responsible for regulating Fiji’s engagement with international carbon market mechanisms and is in the process of developing national regulatory arrangements for carbon markets as required under Part 10 of the Climate Change Act.
In 2021, the Fiji Government secured support from the Australian Government to support the development of a National Carbon Market Strategy Roadmap to help provide initial guidance on carbon market mechanisms, options for Fiji’s engagement, and key considerations and priorities that must shape future strategy and policy in Fiji.
Through partnership with the Australian Government, technical assistance from the Carbon Market Institute was secured to assist with the process to develop a ‘strategy roadmap’. Through multi-stakeholder workshops and consultations with existing project implementers in Fiji and other local expertise, the Ministry sought input to help shape a document that would provide guidance for a range of different stakeholders at the local level as well as international stakeholders interested in understanding Fiji’s profile, priorities, and potential to engage with and benefit from carbon market mechanisms.
The key messages and outcomes of this process have been compiled to produce a draft of the National Carbon Market Strategy Roadmap which is available below for public consultation and review.
Feedback on the content of this draft is welcome and can be submitted here
Feedback should be provided by 29/03/2024 to ensure inputs are considered before the finalisation of the Strategy Roadmap.
