Fiji Advances Climate Accountability through New Digital Transparency Platform
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (Ministry), in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), initiated a one-week national training programme under the Capacity-building for Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) project on the Fiji Digital Climate Transparency Tool (FDCTT), from 13 to 17 April 2026 in Suva. This training was conducted as part of preparatory activities ahead of the official launch of the tool on 28 April 2026.
FDCTT is a national tool developed to centralise and streamline the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of climate-related data. The system supports improved inter-agency coordination, data integrity, and long-term sustainability of Fiji’s national climate transparency framework.
The programme was officially opened by the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Sivendra Michael. In his remarks, he highlighted Fiji’s responsibilities under Article 13 of the Paris Agreement to report on climate action and its progress. He also acknowledged current challenges, such as data gaps and coordination between sectors, and explained how the FDCTT will help address these issues by improving how data is collected and shared across government:
“If we are putting these parameters for collecting data, we need to inform how we will get there. We have the knowledge in the development space but the information is being held, but what are you going to do with that information, how are you going to help the country move forward? These are the questions we need to ask in terms of partnerships and how we intend to move forward”
The training covered the two main components of the tool:
- Activity data platform
- National Transparency platform
Participants were introduced to the structure and functionality of the tool, building technical capacity among the National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) experts and data providers to enter, check, and manage climate data, in line with international reporting requirements. The training also enhanced coordination among government ministries, supporting the formalisation and long-term sustainability of Fiji’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system.
The Ministry acknowledges the valuable support of GGGI, and the trainers from Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) and Citepa for providing essential in-person training.
