Fiji Takes a Key Step in Strengthening National Climate Reporting through National Focal Points
Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (‘Ministry’) convened Fiji’s first National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory (NIR) Focal Point Meeting in Suva. The meeting brought together representatives from key government ministries to support Fiji’s ongoing climate action and reporting as part of its commitment under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), through the implementation of its combined First Biennial Transparency Report and Fourth National Communication (BTR1/NC4).
Discussion focused on Fiji’s approach for the collection, management and reporting of GHG emissions and removals using the Fiji Digital Climate Transparency Tool (FDCTT), including the use of standardised reporting templates. Participants explored the range of data already collected by individual ministries and discussed how these existing datasets could be integrated into the FDCTT to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency. The meeting also addressed ways to maintain the long-term sustainability of the reporting system, ensuring that it supports ongoing monitoring, validation, and transparent communication of national climate actions.
This work forms a critical part of preparing the NIR, which will cover emissions and removals up to 2024, and strengthens Fiji’s commitments under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of Article 13 of the Paris Agreement. By fostering collaboration, integrating existing data, and improving national reporting systems, Fiji is taking a proactive step toward informed and coordinated climate reporting.
