The Climate Change Division (CCD) of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Fiji, organised a two-day workshop on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory Capacity Building in Fluorinated Gases (F-Gases) as part of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) Phase II Project. This workshop was held on 20-21 February, 2024 in Nadi.
The Fiji ICAT project is funded by the ICAT Secretariat managed by United Nations Office Project Services (UNOPS) and being executed by UNOPS appointed GHG Management Institute (GHGMI) as the technical partner to develop and implement the ICAT Project in Fiji.
The National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory Report (NIR), 2023, submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), achieved a significant milestone by incorporating emissions from hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) in air-conditioning and refrigeration units for the first time. The capacity building workshop aimed at reducing the uncertainty level reported in NIR in this subsector.
Therefore, the workshop identified the national sources for HFC emissions data and mapped the relevant national data flows, and provided Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)-based technical training for the national Fiji experts in estimating HFC emissions for the GHG inventory for the highest emitting category (refrigeration and air conditioning). The workshop also explored the reporting of F-gases under the Kigali Agreement.
The participants of the workshop included Department of Environment, Department of Energy, Fiji Revenue and Customs Services, Fiji Bureau of Statistics and Academia.
