In Government’s bid to ensure that there is inclusivity in the nation’s message for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), Cabinet approved the formation of a Technical Working Group (TWG) made up of Government ministries and stakeholders.The stakeholders include Civil Society Organisations, academia, non-governmental agencies and development partners who are working closely with Government to address climate change. The TWG has met two times over the past month, and had their third meeting at the Pacific Community (SPC) conference room in Nabua, yesterday (19.09.24).
In his closing remarks, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), Dr. Sivendra Michael, said that the TWG ensured there was unified and ambitious messaging for Fiji delegation at COP29. PS Michael added that COP29 was not the end of the journey but a part of an important on-going process in securing climate justice, and a resilient sustainable future for all our Pacific people.
He stressed the importance of the role they each play in negotiations to help achieve the goal of the Paris Agreement, of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels.
A brief was also presented to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Professor Biman Prasad by PS Dr. Michael about the progress of the TWG and preparations towards COP29.
