The Climate Change and International Cooperation Division (CCICD) of the Ministry of Economy together with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Pacific Climate Change Migration and Human Security (PCCM-HS) programme hosted a 2-day virtual National Consultation on Climate Mobility on 20 and 21 July 2021.
The consultation provided an opportunity for government agencies, civil society, community based organizations and experts to share experiences of climate mobility in Fiji and discuss the nation’s perspectives and approaches to inform regional level discussions. The discussion was attended by 40-45 attendees on both days. The inputs and discussions captured during the 2-day consultation will inform the work at the national level, including the ongoing development of the SOPs, as well as the upcoming regional framework.
The team also took part in engagement and discussion in a 2-day Pacific Adaptation Virtual Workshop: Constraints, Limits and Transformational Adaptation hosted by SPREP and Climate Analytics team on 20 and 21 July.
The meeting was held with PSIDS to contribute discussion around current adaptation plans and actions, approaching limits and implications to adaptation in a Pacific context. In the breakout session different groups shared examples from their own country on barriers, soft limits and hard limits to adaptation as well discussed where will new constraints and limits will be at the next 30 years. Some of the issues highlighted were forced relocation, lack of data and sharing, Loss & Damage can be a result of transformational adaptation, change of livelihoods and need of technical assistance (funding, capacity building and training).
This two-day online workshop aimed to support practitioners, policy makers and researchers to explore these concepts in practical terms.
