The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or the 2030 Agenda is an integrated roadmap towards ensuring balanced economic, social and environmental development and Fiji in adopting this roadmap is committed to achieving sustainability for all Fijians.
The commitment of the Fijian Government is enshrined in the 5 – year and 20 – year National Development Plan (NDP) highlighting the role of respective ministries and public sector bodies’ towards realizing the goals.
Work is being done to progress the targets and indicators under the SDG goals despite hindrance caused by the Global Pandemic – Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). Relentless efforts are particularly being undertaken for SDG 1 No Poverty; SDG 2 Zero Hunger; SDG 13 Climate Change; SDG 14 Life Below Water.
One of the key factors to ascertain progress on the SDGs is monitoring and tracking of work via available data sets. The SDG Unit under the Ministry of Economy (MoE) undertakes the primary role of monitoring and tracking progress on the SDGs and in doing so works closely with internal and external stakeholders.
A number of initiatives are being looked into which strengthen the monitoring and tracking mechanisms for SDG related initiatives. This includes the setup of a national SDG data tracking system. This will help establish a national dashboard portraying the status of specific indicators. In using a tier based system the dashboard will differentiate between; indicators which are progressing well; indicators where less work has been done; indicators where no work has been done or data is unavailable for monitoring etc.
The Team is working with the Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBOS) and relevant development partners including UNESCAP in successfully setting up a national SDG data tracking system by mid-2022.
