The Climate Change Division (CCD) embarked on the second phase of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) Project, marked by a virtual inception meeting held on Thursday, 18 January, 2024. The event brought together over 45 stakeholders committed to advancing climate action.

Building upon the success of the initial phase, the second phase of the ICAT project will concentrate on enhancing the capabilities of Agricultural Extension Officers. The primary objective is to implement effective activity data collection procedures within the agriculture sector, addressing gaps identified in Phase I’s data collection.

Expanding its scope, the project will encompass two additional sectors within Fiji’s national Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions:

• Industrial Process and Product Use Sector: The project aims to devise an overarching institutional framework and recommendations for the responsible use of refrigerants in refrigeration and air-conditioning. This sector is a significant contributor to hydrofluorocarbons, a key greenhouse gas.
• Waste Sector: Focused on reinforcing Fiji’s mitigation efforts in municipal and industrial waste treatment and utilization. This will involve mapping activity data flows in the solid waste disposal on land category and estimating the GHG impact of existing and potential biogas projects. These efforts align with the waste sector data in the national GHG inventory.

The second phase of the ICAT project underscores the commitment of the Climate Change Division to drive actionable measures for reporting under the Paris Agreement.
